Star codes are known to represent a convenient way to enable or disable features in many Asterisk-based IP-PBX phone systems. These codes are also generally a standard used by many phone systems. Not all star codes work for all systems, however, many of the important apply. Call forwarding, call waiting activate and de-activate and DND are some of the more standard options.
To activate or deactivate a feature you must dial the code from a registered extension. For example dialing *78, then hanging up enables the do not disturb feature. Dialing *79, then hanging up, deactivates the feature.
Star Codes are not only a fast way to set a feature; they additionally operate as a quick way to troubleshoot an issue. If a person complains that they're not receiving calls, they can toggle several star codes to see if certain features might be active, which would prevent them from receiving their call, like Do Not Disturb.
